Crib Sets and Newborn Safety
When buying the crib for your nursery, your mind will naturally turn to bedding next. Most crib bedding sets consist of several items, but some of them may actually be harmful to your baby. It’s really best to keep any extraneous bedding out of the crib, and this is what pediatricians now recommend. If you want to get the most for your money, skip the crib set and the useless (but cute) accessories. Instead, invest in a half dozen comfortable, high quality crib sheets.
Both comforters and crib bumpers are now on the “not recommended” list, because they pose a pretty serious risk of suffocation. Swaddling blankets or sleep sacks are the best alternative to loose blankets and quilts. Baby sacks are like sleeping bags for babies, except that they are worn like a vest, with head and arm holes. If you interested in a swaddling blanket, you might want to investigate some of the more modern styles that aid in getting the right fit. Swaddling can be an excellent way to help a newborn sleep, but it is generally not recommended beyond 6 weeks because of fears it can hinder hip development. You will be holding your baby a lot, so you might still want a blanket or comforter for those times, especially if you’ve had a winter baby. You’ll be fine as long as you remember not to leave the blanket in the crib with the baby.
Another crib accessory is a sleep positioner – a kind of foam wedge designed to keep baby on his back. It’s supposed to reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It should be pointed out here that infants are unable to roll onto their tummies until they are about 6 months old. At this point, SIDS risks are considerably reduced anyway. Since foam is a soft material, these wedges could do more harm than good, by contributing to suffocation risks.
Aside from the standard bedding, a crib set can also include a diaper stacker, a toy bag, or even a window valance. These can make the nursery look great, but aren’t necessary if you’re on a budget.
But if you do want a bedding set, it’s much more affordable to buy gender neutral baby bedding like Versailles Black and White baby bedding. It’s much more cost effective because you can use it again and again, regardless of the sex of your next baby.
