AED 101

An Automated External Defibrillatoris a little, portable machine that evaluates a person’s heart rhythm for any irregularities and, if necessary , advises the trained help to give an electrical shock to the heart of an SCA sufferer. This shock , entitled defibrillation, may enable the heart to return to a normal beat.

An AED puts forth voice prompts to instruct the rescuer . As soon as the device is switched on, the rescuer will be advised to situate the 2 pads provided with the Automated External Defibrillator to the SCA vistim’s chest. Once applied , the AED will commence monitoring the sufferer’s heart rhythm. If a “shockable” rhythm is recognized, the machine will charge itself and instruct the trained help to steer clear of the SCA victim and to push the shock button.

An AED is hard wired to teach trained help specifically what to do , using voice and visual cues . Rescuers place sticky electrode pads on the victim’s chest. Through these electrodes, the Automated External Defibrillator is built to automatically analyze the electrical activity of the heart to decide if a “shockable” rhythm is present .
